| After
making sculpture for the toy and gift industry for over 30 years, I decided
it was time to return to fine art. I had also spent several years raising
Elk and felt that I needed to take advantage of the opportunity I had to
sculpt these magnificent animals from life.
Every summer it seemed I had at least one
calf to be bottle fed. These little guys are incredibly smart as
well as affectionate. Countless hours a day spent caring for them also
offered the opportunity to really KNOW them.
Understanding an animal's emotional
make up as well as their conformation are critical elements of my
sculpture.
As prey animals, the elk are quite aggressive toward most
other creatures they do not fear; particularly predators. They will
also chase after the birds and will stomp them if they can. The ravens are
not a bit bothered by this and simply hop away at the last minute. Elk,
especially calves, will spend hours playing at stomping anything that moves! |
